Principal Acoustic & Business Development Consultant

BEng (Hons), MIOA

ANC accredited for Sound Insulation Testing

Working as a consultant since 2007, David has developed extensive experience in building and environmental acoustics. His specialism is in gym noise schemes which means that David was able to sit within the ANC committee working group on the new ProPG2 Gym Acoustics Guidance for industry stakeholders.

From small single dwelling flats to high-end London apartments, to £Billion multi-use schemes and schools, hotels, offices, industrial units, BREEAM, churches, and retail, David’s work on architectural building acoustics’ projects is varied.

David is bilingual in French/English and travelled considerably during his childhood, having lived in France, North America, and the UK. With his children now fully grown, David’s leisure time is focused on mountain biking and pottery. He aims to take up kayaking when the weather improves.

Education

David graduated from the University of Hertfordshire with a BEng (Hons) in Aerospace Systems Engineering and completed his degree with a one year industrial placement as a trainee acoustic engineer at Airbus in Toulouse, France in 2005-2006.

Work experience

David worked as an acoustic consultant for Hann Tucker Associates in Woking, England before joining RGW Cherry & Associates as an aerospace safety consultant engineer in 2009. David came back to acoustics in 2011 and joined RMP as an acoustic consultant for the French team working on the pilot project for the French rail network in Valence.

From 2013 to 2018, David worked as a Senior Acoustic Consultant at Sharps Redmore before returning to RMP in March 2018 to manage the French branch. Following the cessation of the French Branch, David is now assisting RMP with Business Development and maintaining a close relationship with new and existing clients.

He has undertaken extensive in-situ testing to determine the performance of both internal and external building fabrics on a number of projects, most notably working over noise assessments, noise mitigation of 1000+ residential dwellings. David is fully conversant with noise mapping computer modelling programs to undertake assessments of noise impacts for both small and large scale developments.

Areas of expertise:

Building acoustics:

For the past few years, the majority of David’s work has been executing architectural building acoustics’ projects from small single dwelling flats, to high-end London apartments, to £Billion multi-use schemes notwithstanding schools, hotels, offices, industrial units, BREEAM, churches, retail and gym units.

He has extensive experience in design work for building services noise and vibration control for various projects including schools, residential, office, retail and hotel developments. David has undertaken acoustic measurements of various items of building services plant to establish noise emission levels, for both commissioning and in-situ items of plant.

Planning and environmental:

David has been involved in the planning process for numerous projects and has carried out Environmental Noise Impact Assessments and prepared Environmental Statements for a wide range of developments; including, single-handedly working on the environmental statement for the £2-Billion Victoria Transport Interchange project (Schemes 1 & 2). The diverse range of developments have included residential, hotel, gym units, retail (Classes A & D), offices, goods vehicle operating centres and town centre re-developments.

Structure testing:

David has undertaken extensive airborne and structureborne tests (inclusive of pre-completion testing under UKAS [and ANC] accreditations). He can effectively assess and provide mitigation/remediation measures of possible shortfalls and weaknesses of such structures in terms of compliance with ERs/Building Regulation/office privacy requirements etc.

Industrial noise:

David  has been involved with control and measurement of noise emissions from industrial sites often requiring discussions with Local Authority Officers. He also has experience in undertaking Health and Safety Noise at Work Assessments.

Vibration:

David has taken an interest in and been the specialist person for vibration related schemes/issues and has built-up a significant portfolio in the following:

Gyms adjacent to residential and/or retail; on behalf of landlords, contractors, developers and gym operators/tenants etc

Troubleshooting, acoustic design and mitigation of amplified low bass frequency music/noise, free-weight zones and workout studios

Noise and vibration impact/control from overground and underground railway lines

Specialist vibration: hyper sensitive facilities (micro and nano PPV sensitivities) including university laboratories, atomic force microscopes and a microchip manufacturing facility.
