Graduated with a BEng(Hons) in Architectural Engineering (2006) from Heriot-Watt University, and completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control from the Institute of Acoustics (2006). Nicola joined RMP initially on a student internship in 2005.

Environmental Impact Assessment – Noise & Vibration

Nicola regularly undertakes noise impact assessments in accordance with Planning Advice Note 1/2011 (for Scotland) and Planning Policy Guidance 24 (England & Wales) including transportation Road, Rail and Aircraft), leisure, commercial and IPPC industrial noise assessment. Nicola has also undertaken a number of railway vibration impact assessments in accordance with BS 6472. Where industrial noise has been a factor, Nicola has conducted assessments to BS 4142.

Sound Insulation Testing

Nicola regularly undertakes sound testing for numerous Scottish new build and refurbishment projects in accordance with ISO 140 and the requirements of Section 5 of the Technical Handbook for the Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004. Nicola is a registered ANC tester involved in sound testing in England and Wales in accordance with Approved Document E, the Building Regulations 2000.

Design projects

Nicola has been involved in the acoustic design of projects including residential developments, health care, educational and office buildings.

Air Tightness Testing

Nicola is accredited by Elmhurst Airtightness Scheme (EAS) to undertake Air Tightness Testing. Nicola undertakes measurements of domestic buildings over the UK and non domestic buildings such as schools and churches in Scotland.

Research

Nicola has been involved in European funded research activity as part of her work at Edinburgh Napier University, as a Research Associate on the ‘Low Carbon Building Technologies Gateway’ project. She has undertaken extensive laboratory testing at BPAC Hanger 17 regarding the development of new acoustic systems and products. Recently she has worked with the EU COST Action TU0901 working group on a short-term scientific mission, the results of which were presented at Euronoise 2012.
