Oban High School

Client: Hub North Scotland Ltd

Architect: Ryder Architecture

Contractor: Morrison Construction

Project value: £36m

Project team: Richard Mackenzie, Clement Luciani

RMP was appointed as acoustic consultant as part of the Hub North West framework to undertake the acoustic design for the new build school project in Oban in line with the requirements given in Building Bulletin 93. RMP also provided specific and tailored design considerations in line with the Acoustic brief of the project.

Nominated at the 2020 Scottish Design awards, the building designed by Ryder Architecture is nestled between the prehistoric An Dunan, and a distinctive Scottish landscape. The multifunctional social spaces, including Music Rooms, Sports hall, Gymnasium, dance studios, and an impressive central Atrium made of Oban High School a one of kind learning centre which also benefits the larger Oban community.

The multi-use atrium with large height and volume presents acoustic challenges such as controlling acoustic anomalies such as flutter echoes which occur between hard parallel surfaces. RMP modelled the space and specified absorbent treatments to achieve an appropriate acoustic atmosphere for performances.
