Understanding heat loss while working around the needs of a care home

Investigating an occupied care home requires careful consideration of residents, staff and daily routines. At Overtonlea, RMP worked with Shetland Islands Council to plan building-performance testing around these needs, providing evidence to support future energy improvements.

A dedicated pre-test survey established how the building could be prepared and tested, taking account of ventilation systems, access and security arrangements. Clear guidance gave the building services team an agreed basis for preparation and helped coordinate the work with care-home operations.

Multi-fan airtightness testing, thermal imaging and leakage investigations were then used to assess the building fabric and investigate potential heat-loss pathways. The resulting report helped the Council understand how air leakage and fabric performance could influence comfort and energy use.
