Graduated with a First Class BSc in Architectural Technology (2003) and a Master in Philosophy (M.Phil) in Applied Acoustics (2007) from Edinburgh Napier University, and completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control from the Institute of Acoustics (2006).
Environmental Impact Assessment – Noise & Vibration
Russell regularly undertakes noise impact assessments in accordance with Planning Advice Note 1/2011 (for Scotland) and Planning Policy Guidance 24 (England & Wales) including transportation Road, Rail and Aircraft), leisure, commercial and IPPC industrial noise assessments.
Russell has been involved in the acoustic design of projects including award winning projects, residential developments, health care, hotels, educational and office buildings.
Sound Insulation Testing
Russell regularly undertakes sound insulation testing throughout the UK for a variety of projects including: commercial (schools, cinemas, hotels) completion testing, façade insulation measurements, pre-refurbishment tests for conversions, insulation assessments for upgrades to pubs and clubs as well as completion testing for dwellings under ISO 140, Approved Document E of the England and Wales Building Regulations, Code for Sustainable Homes and Section 5-Noise of Scottish Technical Standards.
Air Tightness Testing
Russell is accredited by The Independent Airtightness Testing Scheme (iATS) to undertake Air Tightness Testing. Russell is also a chairperson of iATS Technical Advisory Committee.
Russell was draftsman for the Robust Details programme for Part E, England and Wales Building Regulations, recognised by the Queens Anniversary Prize in 2009. Completion of a DTI funded Knowledge Transfer Partnership developing bespoke sound and thermal insulation solutions incorporating detailing and modelling. Work experience includes consultancy experience with leading UK practices complimented with management experience at an SME contractor. Russell’s industry engaged research includes detailing best practice for domestic Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) construction funded by the Scottish Construction Innovation Centre, empirical subjective/objective correlations of sound insulation to advise acoustic building regulation guidance for UK government, impact sound insulation in timber construction and UK (UKCES) skills research identifying and addressing the skills shortages within the off-site construction sector.
